Surfboards
Surfboards come in many shapes and sizes these days.
No longer is it a shortboard or longboard world. Most experienced surfers have a quiver of 2-6 boards to deal with all conditions that may be presented to them. We'll start with smallest and end with gnarliest .
Short boards are split up into a number of categories including high-performance,fish,retro and semi-guns.
High performance is just that, boards made to do extreme turns in very tight spots, they don't paddle very well but they will turn on a dime.
Fish are a little more forgiving being slightly wider in the body and tail and sometimes in the nose. Made to plane out on mushy little waves(mostly what we get around here). A favorite of ESA contest surfers.
The retro board has gained popularity in the last year or so. These are boards that have the same outline as surfboards from the early to mid 70's but with modern rockers, rails and materials.
Semi-guns are designed for bigger but not the biggest waves. Nice to have on a stiff offshore day for that little extra paddling power and down the line speed.
Then comes the mid-range or fun-shapes. Also refered to as cheaters or eggs(because of their egg shape). Sized from 6'10" to 8'6", they can be single or tri-fin. Great for surfers just learning their way around the waves or the accomplished surfer looking for an easier paddling(for you shortboarders)or easier turning(longboarders take note) board. Many of the retro shapes also land in the fun-shape range(Harbour spherical Revolver,Martinson X).
Next up the big daddy of them all--the longboard. This is where it all started. Way back in the day you had one choice and one choice only--a big heavy plank. Todays longboards have much better plane shapes and rockers. Materials have made longboards easier to carry, paddle and turn. While not as durable as their predecessors, they sure do ride nice. Longboards also have sub-categories--The Log(just a big ol' single fin beast),the hi-performance noserider(think RA Minchinton model or Harbour HP-1) and the Big wave longboard(Rusty Desert Island or Harbour Habanero). As with the fun-shapes you can get single,tri-fin or 2+1 fin set ups.
A specialty category is the big wave gun. Produced strictly for handling waves that make most of us want to crawl back under the sheets, guns are not for the faint of heart. True guns start at about 7'6" and range up to 11', extremely narrow and thick(for strength and paddling speed). Glassed like a longboard with either a single fin or tri fin set-up. If you are really serious about going after some triple overhead waves, come on down to the shop and we can let you talk to a shaper about some heavy equipment.
Surf Bag
Padded protection for your baby. Also doubles as a sleeping bag on those budget surf trips. Single, double, triple and now 5 board bags are made by a number of surf companys. Some have built in roof racks, others have wheels for getting around the airport without dislocating your shoulder.

Surf Wax
Wax, that one dollar neccessity that we never seem to have when the waves are really linin' up nice. It's what makes us stick to the deck of our board(thats right, you dont polish the bottom of your board with it). Wax comes in different colors, odors, shapes, sizes and temperatures. In Mass. we use mostly cool and cold water wax(softer waxes) while in Florida it's warm or tropical wax(harder waxes). Even though it smells good-don't eat it. Swing by the shop and take a sniff.

Repair Kit
Everybody dings their surfboard, it's one of those things you gotta put up with(like taxes).
Repair kits take some of the sting out of those unsitely holes you just put in the bottom of your board because you needed just one more wave and the tides to low . All-in-one handy dandy ding repair kits. Three flavors, polyester, epoxy and poly-sun cure(deee-luxe).
